The Gunners' boss feels assured that his team can continue to cope with player absences after disclosing that attacker Kai Havertz remains out for the coming weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for German Star

The Germany international has been sidelined for months due to an operation on his knee. Initially expected to return sooner, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when advancing his recovery and could not progress “the next phase.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a squad that is considerably steadier and has greater depth,” stated the manager.

Tactical Decisions for Brentford Clash

This update creates a selection headache for the midweek home game against Brentford. Arteta must choose between persisting with Mikel Merino, who found the net in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who came back off the bench as a substitute. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus remains an option following a lengthy absence.

Fitness Doubts Persist

Additional concerns affect defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Stamford Bridge game. As a result, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to keep their places in central defence for the Premier League front-runners.

Arteta believes the substantial investment on reinforcements in the last transfer window has placed the club in a more robust situation to deal with such unavailability.

Greater Options Vital for Premier League Pursuit

Questioned if increased squad depth was benefiting their league challenge, his response was positive. “Yes, since the current term has been worse in certain positions, and now what’s happening with the backline,” he noted.

“Our previous experiences taught us that we must deploy players in various roles, and they have to be able to fulfil different roles if we are to fight at this level. And the case of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Havertz

Commenting on the delay previously mentioned by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided additional context. “He followed all protocols. He failed to advance to the required step and now the signs are like we have solved that issue.”

He shared his personal desire to see him return. “We’re all desperate to have him. I mean, Havertz is someone that, in my view, I value highly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his character, his personality. I see him suffer on the sidelines.”

“His availability record is outstanding, he’s been always available, and I look forward to get him back with the squad playing because I believe it’s going to be a huge lift.”
