Car Fleeing Police Crashes into Florida Bar, Leaving Four Dead and Eleven Injured
An speeding car while evading police crashed into a crowded bar early on the weekend, killing four individuals and wounding eleven in a vintage neighborhood of Tampa, known for its nightlife and tourists.
An air surveillance unit with the Tampa law enforcement agency observed the car driving recklessly on a highway at approximately 12.40am after police said the light-colored car had been observed street racing in another area, as per a police department statement.
The Florida road police intercepted the car and tried to execute a maneuver that entails bumping a back panel of a escaping car to cause it to spin out, called a pit, but it was ineffective.
State police personnel “disengaged” as the car raced toward the vintage downtown area near downtown, Tampa authorities said. Eventually, the motorist failed to maintain control of the vehicle and hit more than a dozen people near the establishment, officials confirmed.
3 individuals died at the scene and a fourth victim died at a hospital. By Saturday morning, a fifth casualty was hospitalized in critical state, and 8 additional victims were being cared for at area medical centers but were classified as stable, police said. Two other individuals sustained slight harm and declined medical aid at the site. All 15 victims are adults.
“What happened this morning was a senseless tragedy, we are with the families of the victims and everyone who were impacted,” the Tampa police chief expressed in a message.
Authorities identified the suspect as 22-year-old the individual, who was booked on the weekend and is being detained at the local jail.
Court records showed Sampson has been charged with four counts of vehicular homicide and four charges of serious fleeing or eluding with severe harm or death. Each are first-degree crimes. No attorney was recorded for Sampson.
“The community feels this loss,” remarked the city’s leader, who also was Tampa’s initial woman police chief, in a post on social media.
“My thoughts are with everyone affected. The investigation into this crash is continuing, and we are working to obtain answers,” the statement added.
Lately, some states and local agencies have advocated to limit the employment of rapid car chases to protect both civilians and police. Following a increase in fatalities, a recent report funded by the US justice department called for police chases to be minimized, noting that the risk to suspects, officers and onlookers often outweighs the urgent need to take someone into custody.
However, Florida has doubled down on the methods, with the region’s road police revising its guidelines to relax limitations on the application of vehicle pursuits and precision techniques. The justice department-backed report characterized those tactics as “dangerous” and “controversial”.
