Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Girls Abducted in Gunbattle at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a educational institution for young women in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.
The criminal group breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.
The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their hostel, an official report indicated.
A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.
Community members informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
