Israeli citizens mark two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace talks continue
People have gathered across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The incident resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"Our bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed formal memorials until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' representatives met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the proposal.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the negotiations said that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative explained the morning session concluded without concrete outcomes, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the deal.
He commented that the talks are "challenging and have not yet produce any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the gaps between the two sides.
Critical Issues in Talks
- An enduring ceasefire
- The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance provision
- After-conflict administration of the area
Citizen Feeling
In the city's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose brother endured the assault on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - shared: "Nowhere seems like home now and until all the hostages return none of us will have peace of mind."
"When we see all home once more, we can relax again. Then we can commence heal," she concluded.
Outside the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says 48 stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be living.
Demonstrator a participant remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the abducted to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."
Surveys now consistently show that around the majority of Israeli citizens want the war to end in as payment for the liberation of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the area of Nova festival, grieving people assembled to pay their respects.
From the site, the noise of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the severe Israeli bombardment continued.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and locality areas and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"When the dusk falls, the fear comes with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, clinging, notably my youngest child who places his head on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."
Medical Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had taken in the remains of six people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated additional fatalities had been transported. One of them was died by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south region, medical staff said.
