King to Broadcast Intimate Address on Illness in Nationwide Address

The Monarch has filmed a intimate address about his battle with cancer, scheduled for transmission as part of this year's Stand Up To Cancer drive, organised by a leading cancer charity and a major network.

Official sources confirmed the King would reflect on his "recovery journey" as a cancer patient, in a video message on Friday at 20:00 GMT.

The recording, filmed within Clarence House recently, will emphasise the critical nature of routine screenings to ensure more people diagnose the condition at an initial point.

This will be a rare update on the health of the Monarch, who has been undergoing regular treatment since revealing his diagnosis in early last year. Analysts suggest unlikely the King will specify his specific form of cancer.

The Campaign's Central Purpose

The annual charity event each year collects money for medical research and therapies and encourages people to get check-ups to increase the probability of an early diagnosis.

The King's relative openness about his condition, and living with cancer, has been intended to increase understanding and to encourage more people to get tested - and this will be taken a step further with this unusual direct participation.

So far the King's key philosophy to his cancer has been to maintain his duties, maintaining a full diary alongside his ongoing course of care, and he seems not to have wanted to be overshadowed by his condition.

The past twelve months has seen the 77-year-old Monarch, undertaking several overseas trips, notably to Italy and Canada, and welcoming the largest volume of foreign dignitaries to the UK for a generation, which included the German president recently.

Charity Broadcast Event

This Friday's awareness show on television, featuring presenters including Davina McCall, Adam Hills and Clare Balding, will urge people not to be frightened of getting preventative tests.

Each presenter have been personally touched by cancer - one host disclosed recently she had had an operation for breast cancer, while Clare Balding was diagnosed with thyroid cancer over a decade ago. Comedian Hills has previously discussed his parent, who had one form of cancer and then later blood cancer.

The show will reach out to the roughly millions of people in the UK who health organisations estimate are not up to date with national health programmes, with an online checker to let people determine if they are qualified for tests for key health indicators.

In an bid to explain health tests and demonstrate the value of timely identification there will be a real-time transmission from treatment centres at two Cambridge hospitals in Cambridge.

"The goal is to remove the anxiety out of cancer screening and show everyone that they are not alone in this," commented one of the hosts.

Understanding Screening Programmes

Right now in the UK, there are three publicly available checks - for bowel, breast and cervical cancer - available to eligible individuals.

A emerging lung cancer screening programme is also being phased in for anyone at high risk of being diagnosed with the disease, primarily aimed at people in a specific age bracket, who have a smoking history or have smoked in the past.

Male patients may request prostate screenings, but there is lacking a standardised service in place.

Charitable Impact

The Stand Up to Cancer project, which has raised over one hundred million pounds over the past decade, is funding dozens of medical projects with many patients.

His Majesty, in a statement for attendees at a gathering for related organisations in the spring, had referred to acknowledging the "daunting and at times alarming situation" for those diagnosed and their families.

But he noted his first-hand encounter of managing cancer had shown him that "the most difficult times of disease can be alleviated by the kindness of others," as he thanked those who looked after individuals with the illness.

Royal representatives has not made public what kind of cancer the King has, or the medical care he has been given. The King's cancer was discovered following he had undergone a medical treatment.
