Plans for Putin-Trump Talks Delayed Days Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Proposed

There are "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a White House official has declared.

This past week the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was not "needed".

The administration did not share further information on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with insiders suggesting the president had pressured him to give up significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Russia.

However, on this week the American president supported a truce plan backed by Ukraine and EU officials to freeze the conflict on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he said.

Russia has consistently objected against halting the existing front lines.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov said on this week, indicating that halting hostilities would simply constitute a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities demanded attention, the Russian diplomat stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a set of maximalist demands that include the recognition of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president commented conversations concerning the current lines were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.

He additionally stated the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the delivery of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently preceded speculation that the United States was considering delivering extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The talk about the missiles had turned out to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he remarked.
