One two-month voyage around the Land Down Under is being halted following the fatal incident of an elderly woman who was abandoned by the ship on a distant island.

The elderly woman had been walking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the vessel, but separated from the group for a rest. The vessel sailed away leaving her and returned after some time after the crew became aware the lady was not present.

A major search operation found her person the following day.

Officials are investigating the tragedy, alongside law enforcement and the medical examiner.

Head of the cruise operator stated that travelers and crew on the ship were told that the continuation of the cruise had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and earlier mechanical issues".

Through an announcement, he added that travelers would be issued a full refund, and said the company was working "to arrange the return journeys of the individuals via chartered flights".

Authorities also issued an updated announcement, and said they had "issued a notice to the Commander" banning any further travelers from entering the liner.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the liner in Cairns upon its return.

The vessel initially left the coastal city on October 24th, and was only 48 hours into the expedition at the moment of the elderly woman's passing. The tropical location was the first stop on the voyage.

Guests on the vessel - who generally pay substantial amounts of currency to join the expedition - were transported there for a day trip with the option of hiking or snorkelling.
