Slot Insists He Is Secure and Retains Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Eindhoven Loss
Arne Slot acknowledged that it's understandable for doubts to be raised about his position after another heavy defeat versus PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds endured their ninth defeat in twelve games, representing the club's poorest streak since being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league title holders on a punishing evening at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, I am OK, I've received significant backing from management,” the coach remarked.
“It's important to reverse this trend and secure a win of course but when you're in a managerial role and underperforming then it's typical that questions are asked.”
He added, “I'm comfortable with my role. It is not the first time I’ve been in a tough spot but it is about time that we changed our fortunes.”
Conversations with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to elaborate on his dialogues with the team officials, the head coach revealed:
“We communicate frequently. They are helpful to the team and to me and we have those conversations but they aren't calling me every single minute of the day to say they trust me.”
He mentioned, “During our regular discussions I sense the belief. But I've not talked to them after this match so far so we'll see.”
Persistent Problems and Player Response
Slot expressed regret over known weaknesses from his team in their Champions League loss, namely poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more direct in his assessment of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Truthfully, I do not. I’m saying that to everyone,” the midfielder remarked.
“It's simply unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to reflect. I’m past being angry internally. I’m at the point now where I simply lack the vocabulary.”
He continued, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the club I love. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen Liverpool for years.”
“In recent memory, I've not seen a Reds side going through a phase of this nature with performances this poor.”
He concluded, “But we still have that badge on our chest. And until that badge is removed, we’re always going to fight.”
“We’re going to try to get this team return to where it needs to be, prove again what this club is about and why it's known as the greatest side in the planet.”
“At this moment, things are bad and it needs to change.”
