The Latest Casual Game Mode Ignites Heated Debates Over Bots, XP Rewards, and Wait Times

Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a new playlist called Relaxed Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode resembles the regular Breakthrough format but includes a few key adjustments:

  • Each team includes just eight real players, with the remaining filled by AI-controlled opponents.
  • Activities performed by real players award full XP, while bot actions provide lower rewards.
  • Only two locations are available: Siege of Cairo and Empire State.
  • Elements like Player tags, achievements, and stat tracking are disabled.

So essentially, this mode lives up to its name: it's a laid-back version of Breakthrough. On the surface, you might think there's nothing wrong, since it gives additional choices for players looking for alternative ways to enjoy the title. However, if video games has shown one thing, it is that not everyone will be happy. In other words, a lot of Battlefield 6 players are upset.

Player Reactions: Anger to Praise

"People want real players. Avoid making the errors of your competitors," reads one reply to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking concept," says a different user. Meanwhile, in community forums, a player notes, "It's unclear where we are going with this game," and another details everything they consider to be broken in the game: "Resolve glitches, fix drone glitch, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this bot mode."

However, amid the criticism, there are players sharing how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants prevent it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," says a forum post. "The community doesn't understand that there are gamers who actually go outside and can't play this game 24/7. Allow them to strike a balance," states another. A response via social media explains that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is great for me," and another applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."

Constructive Criticisms and Player Input

Despite the support, there are valid points to complain about the new mode. Some users have highlighted that it will make wait times more extended for different playlists because of the large amount of options currently available. Similarly, certain regions often face AI-filled matches in the existing playlists. It also seems somewhat counterintuitive that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of human gamers, even though it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.

Finally, one of the biggest complaints is that a previous feature was meant to offer full XP, including AI matches, but that was removed when they attempted to eliminate bot farms from the mode. Thus this new playlist feels like the community compromising in the middle, as per a Reddit comment. Another describes this addition as the devs "dropping the ball significantly, I experienced so much fun in the initial release, what prompted them to adjust it?"

Looking Ahead: Adjustments Occur?

Should Battlefield Studios has proven anything to date with the latest installment, it's that they're listening and acting on player input. Assignments being too difficult got fixed rapidly, as did the specific battle pass objectives. It is likely that, should analytics shows this recent mode isn't performing to their standards, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
