Top TV Picks: Seven Must-Watch Films This Week

Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's unflinching critique addresses the tyranny of female beauty along with the dreaded aspects of growing older. The veteran actress offers a masterful acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, an aging film star forced into presenting an aerobics show on TV. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer her manager Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and horrifying treatment called "The Substance". This creates a youthful duplicate called Sue, culminating in an increasingly vampiric relationship among both women. Friday 17 October, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This suspenseful thriller features the talented actress in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take a break from covering world issues to board an opulent ship alongside a terminally ill wealthy inheritor and donor, her partner, and other extremely wealthy guests. However when a mysterious woman goes overboard overnight and the entire crew denies she ever existed, her journalistic curiosity take over. Available now, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries with this innovative ghostly tale filmed completely through the eyes of a ghost. When a household including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the camera – representing the ghost – follows them around. The teen shows signs of aware of the supernatural presence, and it looks like protective of her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, with a twist you might not see coming. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Nicolas Cage fully commits to his eccentric image through this meta comedy caper. He plays an egotistical film star called Nicolas Cage who accepts a million-dollar gig to appear at a birthday party on the Spanish island for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by the CIA to spy on the suspected cartel boss, the actor's unconventional method proves useful. October 11th, evening, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone

Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective even without a follow-up. Set in 1970s Colorado, multiple kidnappings has left the children on edge. Once Finney is taken by the villain and imprisoned in a dungeon, he dreads a fatal end. However, the disconnected phone in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, while the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen might rescue him. An effective horror. This Saturday, nighttime, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top true story regarding the shamed religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who states at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals set about monetising the nation's religious faith. It's a riot of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, yet Chastain achieves to present the real-life figure in a likable light. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This period's additional entry from the filmmaker delivers a spy mystery as precise like the turtlenecks worn by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. He receives a mission to identify a traitor inside the organization from a group of five – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors excel of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful mind game of truth or lie unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
