Users Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using such treatments should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
