When Beachgoers Ran From Violence, Viral Image Depicts Lifeguard Running ‘All Out’ Towards the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, describes the famous shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend night, she, along with numerous local residents, noticed cracking sounds echoing through the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. She left her home, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw signaled trouble had occurred.

Positioned on the road, talking to a couple who had run up the incline soaked, she noticed someone approaching behind her. This turned out to be a rescuer, running at full speed to Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was the only one heading in the path that the crowd was trying to get away from, while holding that big kit and barefoot … He’s running towards something that surely every part of you would instruct you to move in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully maximum effort running.”

A Symbol of Bravery In the Wake of Chaos

The image taken by Ching of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous acts of heroism in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, law enforcement and paramedics attending to many those hurt.

Community Reaction and Support

Doolan’s story was just one of many to come out of the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the location of the incident transforming into a impromptu treatment center. Accounts show that other team members were also seen helping out, for instance going into the water to assist people who were struggling.

After the attack, messages of support were shared. A social media message expressed gratitude for the lifeguards who demonstrated that “compassion will always triumph over hatred”.

The team of beach patrol issued a statement, noting they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful words and encouragement. We are overwhelmed by the care shown towards our responders,” the organization commented. “When ready, we will share our stories in the aim that it supports those involved.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many full-time lifeguards, stated that the team rose to the occasion from the second the incident began through to late that night.

“We have heard so many moving accounts, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is incredible,” said a council representative.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate altruism every day in ensuring our iconic beaches protected for the public, but what we observed on Sunday should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the atrocity of this violent and horrific terrorist attack, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much good we have witnessed in the presence of such darkness.”
